How many times do we face people who tell us that we are useless and cannot do anything right? They may be family, friends or your boss at work. It’s time to prove them wrong. All About Amazon’s fake product reviews

Fake Online Shopping Reviews

As the air of skepticism about online transactions got thinner, the Indian masses are shifting in great numbers towards online shopping. Working Professionals benefit largely from online shopping owing to many amazing discounts available on the online shopping sites in India. The increase in the number of people who shop online has intensified the competition among the popular online shopping sites in India like Amazon.in, Flipkart.com, Snapdeal.com

But unfortunately, a few vendors on these popular portals opted for wrong and unethical practices to influence the buying decisions of the online shoppers by posting fake product reviews on their Shopping websites.  A Recent article in ‘Times of India’ and other International Media showcased how Amazon has filed lawsuits against 1000s of people for posting Fake Reviews on Amazon.

Coming to the reason why do vendors on the popular marketplaces need to get fake reviews written, we need to understand – Why Shoppers need Trustworthy Online reviews?

How Online Shoppers are chasing trustworthy sources for their reviews

We trust online product reviews before buying a product to save time and effort

  • Lack of Touch and Feel of the product before buying

Lack of touch and feel of the product, we rely on getting friend’s opinions or feedback provided by other online users about the concerned product. It feels great to read amazing (but only the true ones) reviews about the product, we intend to purchase and sometimes bad experiences shared by other users can save us from investing our hard earned money in faulty products.

  • Reviews save times and money.

Trustworthy and genuine reviews from fellow consumers not only create awareness about the product’s pros and cons but also keeps the manufacturing companies on their toes to improve their quality standards. Thus, genuine reviews are beneficial for customers as well as manufacturers too. People seek online reviews in order to save the time and effort involved in meeting individual users to get their opinions. For e.g. Reading a movie review online on trustworthy sources like IMDB.com is much easier than standing outside a theater and asking all the existing people about their say on the movie.

What Amazon’s Fake Reviews all about?

Fake Online Shopping Reviews

Companies post fake paid reviews on their websites to boost popularity and sales.

Amazon had found that some vendors on it’s shopping sites paid writers on freelancing websites like Fiverr.com to write product reviews for the products. These reviews couldn’t be trusted as they are not written by a genuine customer. Such artificially cooked write ups /reviews were written with a motive.

It is statistically proven that products with good reviews about it are more likely to be sold. So the online shopping sites even go to the extent of removing the negative reviews written by suffering customers to safeguard brand’s image of the site as well as the product.

If we asked you to write a review for your mobile phone that you have recently purchased, what would be your reply?

We are pretty sure that your reply would be short and precise. e.g. “Amazing Product.,.” “Best phone for me,” “Not a Good Value for money phone for me” etc. Would you have time to write a 500 -1000 words long review describing the features of the phone in a sugar coated tone, with Pros, Cons etc?

Why do vendors on these Online Shopping websites posted fake reviews?

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Adding content about the product increase the chance of visibility of the product on google search results. Thus, vendors / online shopping websites adopt unethical practices like posting fake reviews because of the increasing importance of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). The number of reviews for a particular product on the concerned vendors online shopping site largely influence the rankings on Search engines like Google and Bing.
We as customers look out for reviews by other customers and the vendors on online shopping websites try to exploit the same practice by posting fake reviews. The reviews are usually full of praise about the product and also online shopping site as well. After reading such amazing reviews, we, more often than not end up buying such unethically promoted products.
Various Online marketing research negative reviews cost a lot to the Brand and the vendors. It states that for every 1 negative review, 12 positive reviews are needed to safeguard the brand name of the product as well as the e-tailer.
Lots of people not only get good fake reviews written for their product but try to write bad reviews about competitor’s website and/or other vendors. This probably is the worst of all unethical practices adopted by companies to tarnish the image of the competitors. They post fake reviews on the competitor’s sites through paid writers which can largely affect the sales of the concerned web store. Some opportunists also post fake reviews on the online shopping stores to bargain special discount coupons and other non-deserving benefits from the companies.

Why are fake reviews harmful for the user as well as Online Shopping websites?

If you make your buying decisions merely on the basis of the customer reviews available across multiple platforms, you are susceptible to invest your hard earned money in a product which may not be the best option for you.
When we sign up a form or register ourselves on an online shopping site, they ask us to verify that all the details are true to the best of our knowledge. Similarly, we also expect truthfulness and trustworthiness out of the information and reviews on the site.
If you end up buying a wrong product it is obvious that you would like to replace it or cancel the order. Doing this takes a lot of time and effort which may cause distress in your already tight schedules. Online users in India therefore, seek reliability as the most important criteria for their choice of the online shopping site.
When we seek online reviews before purchasing a product, we expect the reviews to be unbiased and trustworthy. However, the fake reviews are biased towards a certain vendor and are targeted towards influencing your buying decision.

How to Identify Fake Reviews?

A professional tone which aims at promoting the product is easily recognizable in the modern times irrespective of the level of sugar coats applied on the content. A genuine review may or may not be written in correct typography for instance use of the chat lingo is prevalent everywhere. Thus, if you find a review written using perfect grammar and punctuations, it is recommended to not rely on it.
A fake review is written somewhere between 300-500 words whereas surveys reveal that a genuine review does not go beyond a sentence. Hence, if you find a long and informative review about Pros., Cons, etc of the product, do not believe it.
The fake reviews can easily be noticed from the information about the features of the products and services rather than just the experience. A genuine review is the reflection of emotions of an individual experience on purchasing a new product.
If you try to Google search about the Reviewer, you may be surprised about the data it reveals. Also, many shopping websites reveal other reviews written by the reviewer and you would notice about great no. of reviews written by some users.

Thus, fake reviews is a practice that needs to be stopped now. Though, Amazon has taken some actions. However, you would have no clue as to how many such fake reviews would have been approved already on other shopping websites?

Buyers must be aware of them to save themselves from the discomforts caused by purchasing a wrong product or service.

Our 2 Cents:

We did foresee this coming and harm it would cause to our online shoppers and thus, to provide the unbiased reviews or opinions, we allowed our users to add their friends / colleagues and share their product related questions and answers, thus making as trustworthy opinion as possible.

Top 5 Android Apps That can Boost Your Work Productivity

Top 5 Android Apps that can boost your work productivity

Working as an employee, I come to realize even though I have a potential to be very work productive, but my productivity at the work place, has a lot of weakness. We come every day to offices with the hope to complete our targets. But by the time, it’s we call it a day, we find ourselves with a big question- Where did the time fly away? I noticed that I as everyone else we stay addicted to phones /devices especially with the huge penetration of social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and other apps, which are now a necessary evil. How much ever, we try to avoid these, it’s our ‘Social/Gossip needs’ makes us think that if we don’t attend them now, the world would collapse. We have become slaves to these disruptive technologies as they are nowadays called. That’s when I did a research of all the Apps that would bring back some control and sanity in our addiction to devices.

Being an Android junky like most others, here are the interesting Android Apps that would increase your work productivity too like it has mine! I found there are many other websites which give a similar list of productivity Apps but the idea here to help employees working increase their productivity.
I divide these Apps in the following Categories as each of them are for different users and purposes.

Activity Timer – Productivity

This tool helps you set a time estimate for activity and displays the remaining time in countdown timer. It’s more like a Gamification that reminds that you are working against the clock all the time. I tried using it with a colleague of mine where we had to beat each other 5 times a day beat the clock for activities we had set. Quite interesting.

IN 5: Productivity Tool

We all need those 5 minutes breaks to check out Whatsapp group messages or the Facebook timelines but by the time we finish those, we realize we had spent more than 15-30 minutes. This tool is quite an interesting app for the people who browse, watch YouTube videos or tweet whole day without concern for the time. This app enables to set a target of 5 minutes to do an activity using your phone, giving you a 5 minute countdown and reminding you to get back to work as soon as those 5 minutes are over.

Get Shit Done

Screen Shots of Get Shit Done!

This is quite an app for those who need the ‘carrot and stick’ to keep themselves motivated to get back to work. The App is cool in terms of design and actually motivates you to pushing yourself away from procrastinating by using foul language. It actually reminds you think while planning a big activity to break it into smaller task. It has 3 modes- Pussy, Tough and SuperAwesome- Modes varying the no. of breaks you plan to take and other settings for pausing the timer in between ‘for world peace’ and enable you to have 5 minutes overtime and make up for your mistakes. However, I would like to say that it’s definitely ‘Get Shit Done!’

If push comes to shove and office deadlines nearing and you don’t want to be distracted at all, then this app helps you to block out various disturbing apps and websites and set time that those apps can disturb you. You can also set up blocks of time that you want to concentrate on your work so that your creative efforts are not disturbed.

IFTTT (IF This Then That)

Most of the time we spend our time taking saving, transferring from one social media or email to cloud storages, sending forwarding, tweeting what we mentioned on Facebook. IFTTT helps you automate that process and it has 1000s of apps/websites integrated where you can choose your recipe (Recipes are process of integrating apps) amongst million recipes and it’s seriously very easy to try your favorite recipes.

If you know of a similar App that can help in their work productivity, please do leave it on the comments field and I would sure incorporate them later.

5 Myths about Employee Rewards in India

Employee Rewards

There is ample evidence to show employee rewards motivate employees to perform better. From our survey in more than 250 small – large companies in the India, we found how Employers try to pinch their wallet by buying employee rewards via meal coupons / products in bulk and give all their top performers the same televisions, tablet etc. But HR forget on how many TVs does one need?

Here are some of the myths that, we at BigPerx found about the present reward program of purchasing products in bulk may not be as successful as one might think.

Myth 1. One Size Fits All

Buying Rewards in bulk is preferred by organizations, as it makes it easier to procure the items. The current employee reward model tends to give employees in the same position and grade the same reward. This can be De-motivating for those employees who have worked hard to meet their Key Result Areas. Such employees will feel their efforts are not appreciated by the organization since their peers, who didn’t meet their goals, also received the same reward.

Myth 2. Employee Reward programs are easy for HR team.

HR teams always aim to figure out what motivates each individual and some even try to customize their employee reward program to the nth degree for each individual. Since it’s near impossible for HR to achieve, for implementation of rewards programs aren’t the only functions, HR negotiate for few selected vendors to buy products in bulk. But the employee do not value or use one of the bulk products they have rewarded.

Myth 3. Annual rewards improve morale.

The current offline rewards usually rely on a single bulk purchase of rewards like coupon or products at the one go. However, a strong performing employee who has been exceeding goals throughout the year, has to wait for HR evaluation at the end of the year. Employees prefer many small rewards that show appreciation over an annual programs as they have to wait for their performance appraisals. The moment an employee feels that he or she was not been recognized for their hard work, they will start looking for another job. Thus, the current employee rewards system doesn’t guarantee employees will opt for long-term association with the organization.

Myth 4. Purchasing Rewards in Bulk is a smart idea

The case of bulk purchases of products or employee rewards coupons is made to ease the burden on the HR rather than keeping employees in mind. When an employee doesn’t like the reward item they received, it’s quite likely they are not used by them. This is a loss for the organization that spends money to procure these rewards.

Myth 5: Small size companies can’t implement Employee Rewards.

The setup for Rewards system is too costly and time consuming due to the amount of effort to deal with multiple agencies. This can challenging for large companies, let alone small or midsize companies. This leads to the risk of losing employees to competition who might have a better rewards system. As a result, Employees and Employers are not very happy with the employee rewards.
In order to change the scenario and create a flexible online employee rewards system that brings a Win-Win value proposition for all stake holders, we at BigPerx
have created an Innovative Employee rewards system.

Some of the BigPerx Employee Rewards program include:

  • Employer can now focus on Performance Appraisals and Productivity and let the employees choose the rewards that motivate them.
  • Employer can grant Rewards throughout the year, not just once.
  • Employer won’t need to spend time / effort on setting up their own rewards programs.
  • Employer need not worry about logistics of delivering the rewards.
  • Employer only pay if/when the employee rewards get consumed.
  • Employer’s size does not matter.
